I have heard various different versions over the years of the song Old Blue written by Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, but this one by Philip Norris beats the lot hands down. When I first played this it absolutely knocked me out. Philip has taken the song apart, given it a whole new arrangement, and for me a complete new lease on life. Absolutely brilliant.

Ross Allen sent me Hillcrest Vol.48 containing your great version of the Roger McGuinn song Old Blue. It is one of the best versions I’ve ever heard. Performed in a perfect way, and never neglecting the roots of West Coast Country. You are a dignified representer of that sound and I hope you keep it that way.

My 3 other favourites are Crazy About You, Angela’s Song and 24 Karat Fool, they are really catching, beautiful melodies and fine singing.

Philip certainly comes up with plenty of originality. Pleasing vocals and such a relaxed style. Star quality in production. Another popular song with wide appeal to Country traditionalists and the modern Country music followers.

___________

I was first introduced to the music of Texan Philip Norris via the release on Hillcrest 48 of Old Blue. If you have read my review of that release you will know that I positively raved about his version of this old song that was revived so well by The Byrds. The recording of Old Blue that opens this album is slightly different in that fiddles and mandolin have been added on the later recording, and this gives the later one the edge. It is all down to personal taste. Different people will have different views. Both versions are simply brilliant!

Most of the other 11 songs on this Country/Rock album are written or co-written by Philip, and vary from country love ballads like (Love At) First Sight, Crazy About You and Angela’s Song, a wonderful love story about two people finally getting together after 24 years, to the hard rock sound of songs like On The Run and Restless Shadows.

When asked to describe his style of music, Philip cited influences like, The Eagles, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and Gram Parsons, along with Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Add to this Philip says, “a little Vince Gill, Shenandoah, Restless Heart and even some Suzy Bogguss and Patty Loveless, top it off with some Don Felder and Bruce Hornsby, and you’ve got us.” This may seem like a fairly eclectic range of influences, but he brings them all together very well.

While not an album for country purists, this is still a very good album. I strongly advise you to go to Philip’s website, where you will find some audio clips, and part of the video for Old Blue.
